What to Wear for Social Media

For the last few Mondays, I have been sharing thoughts on how media has affected our family, and myself in particular. To conclude the series, Courtney over at WomenLivingWell.org asks

“We are never getting rid of screens, so how can we live in this bizarre world in a way that honors God?”

I think the answer is within the question: honor God.

The use of media is not right or wrong, the problem with any use of media comes when our emotions tangle with the characters on the other side of the screen. With television, the characters could be on a reality show. With Facebook and Twitter, those characters may be friends or even people we have never met. With internet sites and movies it could be producers and marketing specialists influencing our view of the world. We often have problems from the use of media because of the feelings that ensue: jealousy, discontentment, acceptance, belonging, laziness, and more. Are we honoring God with this activity? What if we viewed every screen through a filter like that of a camera?

“Filters allow added control for the photographer of the images being produced. Sometimes they are used to make only subtle changes to images; other times the image would simply not be possible without them.” (credit)

We need a filter or we will fall to our human nature. If Paul recognized the temptations of his day and age, can you imagine how much more we are subjected to today? Paul describes the filter we need, complete with description of its power in Ephesians 6:10-17.

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might. Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore, take up the full armor of God, so that you will be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm. Stand firm therefore, HAVING GIRDED YOUR LOINS WITH TRUTH, and HAVING PUT ON THE BREASTPLATE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS, and having shod YOUR FEET WITH THE PREPARATION OF THE GOSPEL OF PEACE; in addition to all, taking up the shield of faith with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. And take THE HELMET OF SALVATION, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

We cannot neglect God’s Word if we hope to live in a way that honors Him. That is true whether or not we own a television or computer. So, I ask you, as I ask myself:

How much time each day is spent reading, memorizing, studying or LIVING the precepts in God’s Word? Who can provide accountability in this area?
