From Winter to Spring

I am not sure what it was about Thursday…all I know is that it feels like I finally turned a corner. In the last three months, we moved across the country and I added work outside the home for the first time in five years. Add that to SkipperClan pursuing his master’s degree, my amazing home business, the kids sports and Scouts, and SkipperClanJr being a senior in high school. I think that is more than enough for one woman to handle.

Sometimes you just have to accept that something will move down the priority list.

Not only can I not do it all, I don’t think I should. Have you seen the little meme floating around Pinterest that says, if you’re too busy to spend time with God, you are busier than God ever intended for you to be? Sometimes busy comes from life crisis like a death in the family, but it lingers if we allow it.

Time is the resource most equally distributed among us, how should I use mine?

As I stop for a breath to see where I spent my February, I look forward to the first days of Spring coming in March.

February’s Final 3 in 30 update…

Family Reunion

This year is my mom’s turn to plan the family reunion her siblings hold each year. I will be working with her, my sister, and extended family to get the details arranged for this summer’s gathering.

My mom and sister will be planning the reunion now, but it looks like we might be getting together for a big weekend on Mother’s Day.

Spring Break

SkipperClanJr is a senior in high school and his baby sister is only a year behind him. We would like to make plans for an enjoyable spring break this year and create memories the kids will take with them. There are work and financial challenges we will need to overcome in order to make this happen.

I am so excited that I accomplished this goal! I found a little duplex for us to rent for a weekend when spring break starts. We’ll be able to walk to the beach. It was really inexpensive. I can almost feel the warm sand between my toes. Now, to pray for beautiful weather that weekend.

Spring Break at SkipperClan

I want to improve my skills in using my lovely new camera and this is going to take intentional planning. I have a photo challenge to help get the creative juices flowing and about one hundred pins to tutorials saved on Pinterest. Time to start using them.

This week had zero photography involved but I definitely worked on the goal throughout the month. My photos may never win awards or warrant a business, but the time I spend with the lens blesses my family and is like therapy to my soul. I hesitated to call myself creative nearly my whole life, this has shown me how wrong I was.

March 3 in 30 goals…

Healthy Habit Weekly

I did great with my fitness challenge for the first 6 weeks of the 90 days…then I started working and…well, I need a reboot to say the least. I want to focus on one specific habit each week, getting back into the healthy routine we were living.

My focus the first full week of March will be meal planning. The more I plan ahead for meals and snacks, the healthier I can eat whether I am at home or work.

Read and Write Weekly

This will be similar to my January goal of blogging 2-3 times per week but I want it to go beyond that. Yes, I’d like to get back in the routine with blogging. This goal is more about bringing words into my daily life after the change to my schedule. Reading some of the 20 books on my 2013 list and writing in journals will also count towards the goal.

I began incorporating my devotional time to my lunch break this week {for days I have to get up at 5 just to be at work on time}. I’ve also tried to read at least 15 minutes per day, borrowing from Crystal’s advice.

Office Systems

I plan to purge some files, update our household & finance binders, and finish organizing the space. I was really inspired by some of the photos over at Sam’s Noggin. {We even have the same inbox} This might be the extent of the Spring Cleaning I do this year, too.

It’s fun to say I have already accomplished something towards this goal, I just assembled a new desk chair today that I think will be much better for my back. Why have a great space if you don’t actually use it?

What are you looking forward to about Spring?

2013 Goals {Believe}

New year, new start, clean slate, fresh perspective…

I love it.

Last year I chose to focus on Finish, but it seemed to be anything except that on December 31, 2012. I did not finish the career goal I envisioned, I did not reach the financial milestone I pursued, and I did not memorize James. Book covers collected more dust and my Allume ticket went to another faithful woman. What did I do? I served a group of Christian military wives, I moved again, and I came home to be with my mom after the passing of my stepdad.

How do I list goals for a new year while still unpacking the last one?

Tsh has a great set of questions that I used over a year ago to draft long term goals. Those goals are filtered through our current circumstances then I’m left with this year’s babysteps. Goals for 2013 seemed to start pouring out of pen onto paper.

I don’t want my goals to just be a grand to do list, I want them to be vehicles to helping me become more like Christ. This has been what I’ve prayed about over the last two weeks as I’ve reminisced over 2012. Finally, today it hit me. That goal to memorize James last year? I only got about halfway through chapter 1. When I started thinking about what I truly believed God wanted me to focus on this year, all I could think of was:

“But when he asks {for wisdom}, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.” James 1:6

I’m asking God for wisdom for this life, I’m believing in Him. As I journey through the next twelve months, I will continue to incorporate the 3 in 30 Challenge monthly.

3 in 30 Week 52 {A Finish Year} Update

Would you like to stay focused on your goals? Connect with other bloggers at Aurie’s 3 in 30 linkup for accountability.

While I have not kept up with weekly updates as I hoped, this has been a good month. I’ve enjoyed having these 3 in 30 goals each month and hope you have found inspiration here.

calendar goals

I started this year with a focus on one word for 2012: Finish. Honestly, it feels like I’ve done anything but finish my goals this year, but I never could have dreamed I would move across the country this year. There were a list of things on my goal sheets at the beginning of the year that were left undone, but I have learned that following God’s lead is more rewarding than finishing a goal. Several of my goals were met, just not in the way I expected. I love it when God reminds me that He is “able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us.” Ephesians 3:20

December Goals:

Enjoy A Memorable Christmas Season

The catalyst for our move was the loss of my stepdad and the opportunity to move closer to my mom. I love decorating for, and celebrating, Christmas. I am looking forward to spending time with my mom of course, but really our entire extended family. This is also our son’s last Christmas before graduating high school (yikes!) so I want to get settled quickly and keep our traditions going.

Settle Into Our New Home

One of the good things about moving right before Christmas is having a deadline for unpacking. I would truly love to have everything unpacked and arranged by the end of the month but I also want to complete my goal of enjoying Christmas. Settling into our new home means that everyone gets acclimated to their new city, school, and work. Hopefully we will be able to have our furniture and belongings delivered right after we get the keys to our new home so I can begin unpacking quickly.

When we came home from Christmas travel, it felt like coming home so I’m considering this goal met, we also completed several more tasks for the actual home.

  • We had the repair people out to fix the kitchen pipes, the carpet cleaners out {again} for our room, and the cable company out {again}
  • We found the last of the pictures and my gallery wall is complete in the dining room
  • We unpacked a half dozen more boxes and gave away or recycled the empty ones
  • We put outdoor lights in the front garden that we received as gifts
  • We have learned where local shopping and dining options are nearby

Write 90 Minutes Per Week

I have been reminded so many times over the last few weeks how much I enjoy writing. Sometimes that is blogging, other times it’s journaling. It might be a card to a friend or a poem after my quiet time. I believe this practice will help keep me grounded.

  • I wrote another guest post and completed two for this blog
  • I did not journal this month as I hoped
  • I am finishing thank-you cards tonight

What are you most excited about finishing this year?

3 in 30 Week 13 Update

No joke, March is over and April is here. Time for another 3 in 30 Goals roundup and decision time for the new month’s goals.

Memorize James Chapters 1 and 2

Totally missed this for March, but I am still going to work towards my goal to memorize this book in 2012. I believe using the notebook I assembled last week is helping tremendously, but I will no longer be tracking my progress here on the blog. Hopefully before the year is over I’ll be able to share my success in reaching this goal.

Increase Monthly Income

I did not reach this goal either, but my efforts have increased my momentum and helped me finish last week strong. I also added new team members and have a separate project in the works that will increase future income. I completed April’s budget in advance and believe working on both income and spending decisions will help us reach our goals. I even made new cash envelopes to use for a couple of key categories.

Utilize My Family Binder

I did read more this month and completed my weekly tasks more consistently. I also went through more of the monthly tasks than I had in previous months. I’m considering this goal reached; not because I did everything on the lists, but because attempting to do so helped me realize what systems work well for me. I also completed 25 of the 33 items on my Bug List. This girl loves putting a line through completed items on the to do list!

Let’s talk about April’s 3 in 30 Goals

I will continue working towards my Finish Year goals of reaching my monthly income target, running 3 miles, and reading 24 books. Each month needs focus though, so I have chosen three goals that will help simplify my life.

Spring Cleaning

I plan to work through the entire house, literally top to bottom, purging and deep cleaning.

Updating Contacts

My email programs and business records need to be synced and purged. I plan to go through one letter of the alphabet each day.

Simple Blogging

This month I’ll be working through the Simple Blogging e-book with the other bloggers from the 3 in 30 Challenge.

That’s the plan here, what are your April goals?

3 in 30 Week 12 Update

There is only one week left in March, but I plan to work on my goals with just as much intensity as I did during the first seven days of the month. Instead of telling myself I only have one week left, I’m focusing on the fact that I still have one week left.

Memorize James 1 and 2

It is clear I will not reach this goal by the 31st since I have yet to finish memorizing even the first chapter of James. Missing a goal just means I am aiming high enough to stretch myself. The challenge to memorize the entire book of James is a big goal for 2012 and one I know I’m not capable of in my own ability. This challenge may in fact be the ultimate test for my Finish Year focus. I think I’m starting to move past frustration and into stubbornness. Persevering in this task will surely spill over into other areas of my life, so I can’t even consider giving up. Just this week I read a great tip at The Peaceful Mom on using an index card notebook to aid in Scripture memory. I’ve already gotten my own and will place the current verse inside the front pocket until it is complete.

Increase Monthly Income

This week was challenging. Appointments postpone and calls don’t always lead to sales. This is one of the trade-off’s of working for yourself. The month as a whole still looks like it will be an improvement over the prior month, which is the purpose of tracking this. It also really helps that I absolutely love spending time with the women I meet at appointments. I am so grateful that many appointments I held over the last few years continue to contribute to our family income. Ultimately, I will reach this goal when I spend time meeting the needs of women God places in my life.

Utilize My Family Binder

In addition to completing most of the weekly tasks in the midst of a busy week, I exterminated several more items from my Bug List. However, I have realized that I truly procrastinate when it comes to cleaning our bathroom. I’m seriously considering keeping our cleaning supplies in that room and not even coming downstairs on Tuesday until the job is done. That, or I’m just going to decide it’s really okay to only deep clean it every other week. I’ve also found a very comprehensive Spring Cleaning list that I think I’ll be using to track one of my April goals.

One of the biggest benefits of tracking my 3 in 30 goals this year is that I’m able to see where I want my focus to be the following month by the time a new month is drawing near.

What do you want to finish before the calendar moves from March to April?

Foto Friday #14: My One Word

We close the book on another year tonight and tomorrow we open a new journal, full of blank pages and hope. I love the promise and hope that comes with these days, but more and more I realize that each day holds this hope…each hour in fact. I believe strongly in written goals and know that pursuing them with intention makes me a better woman even when I fall short of achieving them. Maybe you have a list of resolutions, maybe you think they are silly. I think I am somewhere in between. I see the value in focusing our energy toward the goal, but not in thinking we can only start something January 1st.

For the last couple of years, I have seen friends and other bloggers mentioning their One Word. God began putting this on my heart throughout the fall season, although I could not put it into words. I think you might be surprised to learn my One Word for 2011 is FRUIT.

Organic Fruit by skipsmkgirl, on Pix-O-Sphere

Not eating fruit, but living a life that exhibits the Fruit of the Spirit more fully.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

Galatians 5:22-23

Do you have New Year’s resolutions? Do you think they are pointless? If you had to choose one word for the year coming to a close, 2010, what would it be?
